Nobody wants to have a car accident. It’s a big fear for many of us. We all know there are a lot of idiots on the road. There are also a lot of scenarios that can contribute to an accident. We can make a mistake due to weather, visibility, distractions or other drivers. It’s easy to have an accident – which is a shame, of course.

We bet you knew that. What you didn’t know is that there are all sorts of other factors that affect car accidents. There are lots of statistics around car accidents, and interesting facts appear in the data. These facts don’t mean that you’re certain to have an accident – but they are unusual little quirks. Here are just three of the weird trends that occur when cars crash on our roads.

1. The colour of your car affects your chances of crashing

Sounds crazy, but it’s true. Studies have shown that black cars crash more often than any other colour. You may think that there’s no connection between the car colour and the accident rate. In fact, that’s not the case. It’s all to do with visibility. Other drivers can spot more visible cars. That means they crash less often. The safest colours for a car are yellow, white and gold – bright, visible colours.. Black cars have the greatest chance of crashing during the night. That’s obvious – you can’t see a black car when it’s dark outside. Interesting, right? Avoid black vehicles to avoid a nasty smash.

2. Your profession can steer you out of trouble

Are you a doctor? Well, we’ve got some bad news for you. That makes a change, right? Doctors are the most dangerous drivers on the road. 29% of them have made an insurance claim in the last five years – an astonishing rate. Health workers in general have terrible accident rates. Eight out of the top ten most dangerous professions on the road are health workers. Experts say this may be due to the stress levels that these people have to carry with them.

3. Different models of car crash at different rates

That may not be too surprising. You may assume that certain types of car – fast ones, perhaps – crash more often. That’s not the case. The most accident-prone car on UK roads is the Honda FR-V, an SUV model. In fact, big cars with many seats fill many of the top spots on this list. Perhaps people don’t know how to handle larger vehicles? Mazda’s 2, by contrast, almost never features in accidents. Neither does the Ford Focus. (You can buy one at the Hilton car supermarket if you want to stay safe!)

What have we learned, then? Well, we know that you should steer clear of doctors driving black Honda FR-Vs. Impossible, but at least you know. In reality, if you want to avoid having an accident, just concentrate and be responsible. If you drive in the right way, you’ll avoid an incident almost every time.
